Home Remodel on a Budget: Simple Fixes and Redecoration

in

After a year of searching, we bought our first home 3 months ago! We took the plunge and moved out of Amsterdam and into "the Dutch suburbs". Although we thought it would be a big change, trading the hustle and bustle of the big city for our terraced house with a big garden wasn’t so hard after all. We fell in love with the house and especially the outside space on the first viewing and now that we’ve been living here for a few months we’re already feeling like it really is our home. (And as for the hustle and bustle; it’s only a train ride away ?)

Modesty is soo passee

in

Hello, my name is Mariella and I am a modest introvert.

Lately I really do feel like I have to apologize more and more for being modest - It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a modest innie support group, now that I think of it -  Especially in the fast-paced  Dutch society where fast talkers and big ego's rule the world, I'm feeling this pressure more and more.

Hi guys,

From the first bud

Some of you may have noticed that posts have been few and far apart lately. I've entered the final year of my PhD and the pressure is starting to build. Failing experiments and publication stress, it's all in the game. And I haven't even begun to think about my defense! Or writing my thesis! *Shiffer* I try to find some comfort in the fact that almost every PhD I know who has graduated and now is working in 'the real world' has assured me that finishing your PhD is simply the hardest thing that you will ever have to do. Guess that's good news and bad news..

China Inspiration

in

Here is one thing I can cross off my bucket list :D After a turmulent year (and much too much time since my last vacation) we finally did it; three weeks travelling around China! I have always wanted to go to China. Firstly because I am half Chinese (:)) - but know shockingly little about China - and secondly because I always wondered about that huge country that has one of the richest cultural heritages in the world. We started in the North, in Beijing, and travelled towards the south via Xi’an, Yangshuo, Shenzhen and finally Hong Kong. The experience was in one word ‘impressive’.

Pfew, what a crazy couple of weeks! I have been super busy with work and also scrapping and I didn't have any time to update the website. I am just now settling back into my daily routine and trying to remember all the little projects I had going on :P

Summer Time on Campus

Being cooked up in the lab all day, occasionally we PhD students need to go outside and remind ourselves that there is life outside of our offices. It becomes especially evident during the (rare) Dutch summers when, for a few days, everyone wears shorts or mini-skirts and stretches out on any available patch of grass. Whether that patch of grass is in a park or next to a busy road is irrelevant.  The same thing happens at our university and the pieces of ‘lawn’ in between the buildings and bus lanes become covered with people.

My new business cards have arrived!

My new business cards have arrived! After an absolutely horrible day at work; seriously anything that could go wrong went wrong. The biochemists and biologists among us will appreciate when I say switching your KAc and SDS tubes during your DNA isolation and running your DNA gel the wrong way...
